Geocache Description:

This wetland property, which is managed by The Couchiching Conservancy, and is surrounded by residential neighbourhoods, provides a unique oasis of green within the City of Orillia. The Trans-Canada Trail runs nearby.

Climb the stairs to the viewing platform and have a look at the wetland surrounding you. NOTE: please be cautious as there is frequently Poison Ivy surrounding the platform and the steps.

Unique features of this property include:

  • five small streams converge and run through property before discharging into Lake Couchiching
  • along the eastern boundary, a band of trees includes black walnut planted in 1949, as well as native poplars and willows
  • most of the wetland is cattails and wet grassland area mixed with green ash and red osier dogwood
  • beaver and muskrat are active in the wetland area
  • Redwing Blackbird actively nest within the cattails, and an Osprey Nesting platform has been built at the centre of the wetland
  • the Sundial Creek Habitat Project, which includes this area, is dedicated to enhancing brook trout habitat, supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the City of Orillia

This cache has been placed as part of a joint effort by the City of Orillia Active Transportation Committee and the Parks & Recreation Department. It is here with specific permission of the landowner - The Couchiching Conservancy.
