James Cannon’s son, Charles, was placed in charge of the mills day-to-day affairs in early 1921. By the summer of 1921, James was elected as Chairman of the Board and Charles was made president of the company. With Charles in charge, the company entered it golden years. In 1928, Charles organized nine textile companies into one large corporation. With over 300,000 towels being produced each day, this mill quickly became the world’s largest producers of textile products. Charles retired in 1962 at the age of 70.
Donald S. Holt replaced Charles and the profits continued to rise. A one million square-foot towel distribution center was erected in 1962. This was followed by an 840,000 square-foot sheet distribution center in the early 1970s.
This mill traced its roots back to the completion of the first mill in 1907. The name Cannon remained with the mill until it was purchased by an outside company in 1997.
