Dale Earnhardt was one of Kannapolis’ most famous sons. Dale was a professional stock car driver for over 27 years. Dale was affectionately called “The Intimidator”, a nickname earned through his aggressive driving style.
Earnhardt is regarded as one of the best divers in NASCAR history. He won a total of 76 Winston Cup races during his career and in 1994 won his 7th NASCAR Winston Cup championship, tying Richard Petty for the most all-time.
Earnhardt drove with the No. 3 on his car for a majority of his career. Earnhardt’s legacy in the iconic No. 3 has led to its absence from the NASCAR series since his death. It is believed that NASCAR owners have agreed to never use the No. 3 in Cup competition again. However, NASCAR has not officially retired the number. Only the International Race of Champions officially retired the No. 3. The number has been utilized in other NASCAR series such as, The Camping World Truck Series and the Busch Series. Dale Earnhardt’s son, Dale Jr., made three special appearances in a No. 3 Busch Series car; winning two of the three races.
Earnhardt has several roads named after him, including Dale Earnhardt Boulevard here in Kannapolis. The North Carolina Department of Transportation changed the designation of the road between Kannapolis and Mooresville, which passes by Dale Earnhardt Incorporated, from NC 136 to NC 3.
