As I was driving along the sidewalk on my way to the coffee shop, I passed this tree with perky little green cones and I asked myself "What kind of tree is this?" The needles were in bunches and the only tree I knew of, that the needles were in bunches, was the Tamarack and they lose their needles in the fall and this was winter. I was puzzled. I went home and looked on the internet for conifers with needles in bunches and perky, bright green, upright cones. Three possibilities, all from eastern Mediterranean, all similar and of the same family. The size of cone indicated (Cedris Libani) or true cedrus.
A friend of mine, who learned in Spain, was told luthiers there used true cedar for making flaminco guitars. This tree is the symbol used on the flag of Lebanon.
