Geocache Description:

This is a small disgusied geocache, not for the squeamish. Hence the name.

Parking is available adjacent to the cache which is situated on the edge of Goonhilly Downs. This is a favourite place for dog walkers and hikers but muggles tend to be few and far between.

The area is overlooked by Goonhilly Earth Station with its array of massive satellite dishes. This was formerly known as RAF Dry Tree, an important radar base during WW2. There are mounds built across Goonhilly Downs to deter enemy gliders from landing. The satellite dishes were first used for the Telstar communication satellites. The first two Telstar satellites were experimental and nearly identical. Telstar 1 was launched on 10th July 1962 and successfully relayed through space the first television pictures, telephone calls and provided the first live transatlantic television feed. Although no longer functional it is still orbit! The array of dishes are now used for deep space exploration.

Goonhilly Downs is a Site of Special Scientific Interest that forms a raised plateau in the central western area of the Lizard. The downs themselves are an area of sparse heathland, based on serpentine geology. This is home to rare plants, such as the  Cornish heath, which has been adopted as the County flower. A menhir, named Dry Tree, can be found on the downs, near the Earth Station site. There are also many Early Bronze Age (c2500 to 1500 BC) round burrows scattered across the downs.

The cache itself is placed on the top of an ivy covered stone wall adacent to a path from the car park. Please replace it carefully so as not to be too easily viewed by passers by. Being small, you will need to use your own pen and tweezers may be necessary to extract the log.
