Discover the history of Plymouth County at one of Iowa's largest Historical Museums. If you so wish, you may stop into the building Tuesday - Sunday 1PM to 5PM and learn about the History of Plymouth County. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
The Plymouth County History Museum is housed in a former Le Mars school building. An elevator serves all 5 handicap accessible levels of exhibits.
The school building, fondly known as "Old Central" was constructed in 3 sections: Middle (1905); south (1925); and north (1952). "Old Central" was home for the high school, junior high, and elementary classes. The building was used for the final time as a school during the 1980-81 year.
The Plymouth County Historical Museum, organized in 1965, outgrew its building at the Le Mars Airport and moved into "Old Centrals" south section in 1983. Renovation of the 1905 section is still continuing.
Old Central Gym and Auditorium, built in 1925, played a big part in the lives of those students who attended "Old Central" School. The Museum purchased this section of the building from a private business in 1999 and restored the space. Plush red seats, rescued from an area theater, add to the ambiance.
While inside, be sure to stop up at the Miller's Lunch counter and Enjoy a refreshing root beer float in the Ice Cream Capital of the World.
