JEAN-ISIDORE GAIRE – CANADA150

*PLEASE BYOP*

If Wauchope and other communities in southeastern Saskatchewan have residents of Francophone origin, it is partly due to the efforts of colonizing missionary, Monsignor Jean-Isidore Gaire.

Born in Alsace in 1853, Jean-Isidore Gaire settled in Canada in 1888. He first went to Manitoba and later settled in Wauchope. In the meantime, the missionary made many trips back to Europe to persuade people to settle in Western Canada, something he succeeded quite well in doing as many families followed him.

In 1901, he was appointed priest of the parish of Saint-François Régis of Wauchope. At the time of his death in 1925, he had worked for more than 37 years as a colonizing missionary.
