This ranching country rewards those who watch closely. On the rolling grassland, the few trees are valued by nesting birds, especially hawks. The grassland includes a whole array of wildflowers, with each season and even year featuring new types. The marshy area to the west may be wet enough for ducks, or barely moist by the end of the summer. Cattle graze the hillsides as their calves grow quickly.
