During the Edo period, the Gyounin-zaka slope is in one of the main roads of Meguro road to visit Meguro immovable.
People of those days visited Fudo Meguro on foot from the town of Edo.
Because this slope is a very steep slope (average slope 15.6%), it is said that Gonnosuke-zaka slope was made nearby.
The name Gyounin-zaka slope comes from Okona located on the south side of the slope.
At the beginning of the Edo Period, there were some bad people who were suffering the inhabitants near here.
To expel them, in 1624, the Edo shogunate opened a temple by suggesting the ocean which is an official from Yudonoyama (Yamagata Prefecture) .
He wiped out the bad guys.
With that achievement, the temple was given name the temple of "Daienji".
Dainichi-nyordo was built in the temple, many of the gangs lived in the neighborhood and began to practice.
It is said from this that it became known as "Gyounin-zaka".
The Daienji temple in the middle of the slope is a temple that became the source of fire at the Meiwa Great Fire (April 1, 1772).
Meiwa's big fire is one of the three major fire in the Edo period (Meireki Great Fire, Meiwa Great Fire, Bunka Great Fire).
It was a big fire that took off from this temple and burned down the center of Edo such as Nihonbashi.
Arsonists were punished. And the temple was also accountable and could not be rebuilt for 70 years.
There are many sightseeing spots in the precincts such as statue of Buddha statue of important cultural property and stone statue group including Five Hundred Han Han.

「行人坂」は、目黒駅前から目黒雅叙園、目黒側に架かる太鼓橋に至る急な坂です。
江戸時代の行人坂は、目黒不動に参拝するための人々が通行する「目黒道」の一つでした。
江戸町中から目黒不動を参詣しました。
この坂が非常に急な坂（平均勾配15.6％）であるため、近くに権之助坂が作られたと言われています。
「行人坂」の名前は、坂の南側に位置する大円寺に由来しています。
江戸初期の寛永年間（1624）、この付近で住民を苦しめていた悪人どもを放逐するため、江戸幕府は奥州（山形県）湯殿山より高僧行人・大海法印を勧請して寺を開きました。
法師は悪者どもを一掃し、その功績で、寺には「大円寺」の寺号が与えられました。
寺には大日如来堂が建立され、多くの行人たちが周辺に住み修行するようになりました。
このことから「行人坂」と呼ばれるようになったと云われています。
坂の途中にある大円寺は、江戸時代の三大大火（明暦の大火・明和の大火・文化の大火）のうち明和の大火（明和9年2月29日（1772年4月1日））の火元になった寺です。
このお寺から出火し、日本橋など江戸の中心部も焼き尽くすほどの大火事でした。
放火犯は処罰されましたが、出火元と言うことで責任を問われ70年もの間再建できませんでした。
境内には重要文化財の釈迦如来像や五百羅漢を含む石像群など見所がたくさんあります。
