A short walk on the Ice Age Trail
Lapham Peak has more than 17 miles of loop trails in the forest that vary in difficulty. Trails may be combined to custom-create your own circuit or one-way hike. Most trails are open to hikers in the summer and cross-country skiers in the winter. There is a 2.5-mile lighted loop during winter for night skiing. Trail lights are on until 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. No lights on Sunday nights.
Hikers, pets and snowshoers must stay off of the ski trails when they are snow-covered. Pets on designated trails must be on a leash (no longer than 8 feet long). A state trail pass is required for bikers, horseback riders and skiers 16 years of age and older. On trails shared by mountain bikers and horseback riders, a mountain biker should never pass a horse from behind. Calmly call out that you want to pass, so the rider can turn the horse around to face your bike. Then you can pass safely. If there is a horse coming toward you, it is best to just stop your bike and allow the horse to pass you.
There is a little known parking lot on Cushing Road that will allow you to park and use the trails on the West side of the park. There are numerous hiking, biking and horse trails assessable from this road. History and information provided by Lapham Peak Unit - Wisconsin DNR.
