The Great Divide:

The Great Divide is the one most of us think of as The Continental Divide. This is the longest of the divides, starting at Cape Prince of Wales Alaska and ends at Tierra del Fuego near the southern tip on South America. In North America, the Great Divide mainly runs North to South and separates Westward drainages headed towards the Pacific Ocean or the Sea of Cortez from the Eastern drainages headed towards the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. The other three North American divides delineate major drainage areas.

The Great Divide is located at a distance of approximately 10 miles from where you are standing. If you are headed in one particular direction, you may have already seen the sign that marks the location. If you are headed in the opposite direction, you will see the sign for the Continental Divide once you resume your travels in that direction.

Though there are many other hydrological divides in the Americas, the Great Divide is by far the most prominent of these because it tends to follow a line of high peaks along the main ranges of the Rocky Mountains and the Andes Mountains, at a generally much higher elevation than the other hydrological divisions.

How to Log this Earthcache:

In order to claim the find, send me an email using the link just belot the Earthcache title with the answers to the following questions:

Send me your answers BEFORE logging the find.

1) If it were raining right now where you are standing (I am assuming it is not since you are in the middle of the desert), in which direction would the water flow?

2) Assuming it makes it all the way to the ocean, in which ocean, sea or gulf would the rain water end up?

3) From this location, can you spot any change in elevation that might give you a clue as to where would the water flow?

4) What does your GPS receiver say is the elevation at your present location? If you do not have a GPS with you, use your phone. many phones  and several geocaching apps can tell you your present elevation.

5) (NOT Optional) Post a picture of yourself at the GZ. Your face doesn't need to be in the picture. You can alternatively take a picture of something that identifies you or your group (i.e. a piece of paper listing all your geo nicknames with the GZ in the background). Per the latest Earthcache guideline revision, this is no longer optional, it is now REQUIRED to be able to claim your find.
