Geocache Description:

This cache is easy to find at a lovely spot to sit and reflect. There is parking close by and easy access from all directions.

1st Woodend Scout Group was formed in 1927 and has been operating very successfully ever since. In 2017 we decided to create a series of geocaches to help celebrate 90 years of continuous scouting. Our scouts were first introduced to Geocaching during the Australian Geocaching Competition run by Scouts Australia in 2013.

The Wall of Remembrance commemorates servicemen and women from the district of Woodend and Newham who served in World War One. The wall was installed in September 2015 at the southern end of the town’s Avenue of Honour and is composed of polished black granite and a grey Harcourt granite sculpture by local artists Ashika and Padma Ostapkowicz.

The Wall of Remembrance has a description of the history of the avenue and the names of 186 people from the district. The 2.4-kilometre avenue includes 230 English and Algerian oak trees planted on September 14, 1918 to honour men and women from Woodend and Newham who enlisted in World War One. 1st Woodend Scouts of all ages walk to the Wall each year in the lead up to ANZAC Day and spend time learning about the significance of the trees that they see everyday. Older Scouts walk the length of the Avenue and locate various trees to learn about individual service men and women.
