Geocache Description:

Great Crossing

The region was sporadically settled by as early as 1775, and an army outpost, McClelland's Fort, was built overlooking the Royal Spring in Georgetown in 1776. After an attack by Indians in 1777, the fort was abandoned. A permanent community was not established until the winter of 1783 when Robert and Jemima Johnson established Johnson Station near the North Fork of Elkhorn Creek. Johnson Station was later renamed Big Crossing and later Great Crossing because of the buffalo crossing nearby. It is located approximately five miles west of the current location of Georgetown. Great Crossing Baptist Church was organized in May 1785 near Great Crossing on Elkhorn Creek. Landowner and farmer, Robert Johnson donated land for the church and Elijah Craig became its first pastor. A post office operated here from 1811 to 1905.

Great Crossing Park amenities include an open area, a boat ramp, picnic shelter, parking areas, and a walking path/nature trail that connects with Western Elementary School.

This geocache is one of 12 geocaches that comprise the Scott County Geotrot. Passports are to be given out at the August 12, 2017 Scott County Geotrot event. Geocachers will visit all 12 geocaches along the trail and stamp the corresponding block on the passport and turn it in for a prize as supplies last. After the event, passports will be available both inside the Georgetown-Scott County Tourism office located at 399 Outlet Center Drive, Georgetown, Kentucky and outside the tourism office in the designated Scott County Geotrot passport box after hours. Completed passports can be turned in here as well.

Please remember to leave the designated stamp and ink pad inside of the geocache containers! Permission to hide geocaches has been obtained by the property owners.
