The route has an overall length of 4,860 miles or 7,821 km. The route links several provincial highways, including No 1 (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba), No 17 (Ontario) and Nos 40, 20 and 185 (Quebec). It travels through all ten provinces of Canada, but there is no Trans-Canada Highway through any of the northern territories nor through Labrador. The Trans-Canada Highway is the world’s longest national highway.
The highway system is identified by distinctive white-on-green maple leaf route markers.
In 2012, a series of free public electric vehicle charging stations were installed along the main route of the highway by a private company, allowing electric vehicle travel across the entire length of the Trans-Canada Highway. This made it the longest electric vehicle-ready highway in the world.
