Geocache Description:

This three stage multicache will take you along a journey to fill you in on the history of the Wabash and Erie Canal in the New Haven area. A Cache mobile is required. There will be information at stage 1 and stage 2 in order to help you find the cache at stage 3.

The Wabash and Erie Canal was a shipping canal that linked the Great Lakes to the Ohio River via an artificial waterway. The canal provided traders with access from the Great Lakes all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Over 460 miles long, it was the longest canal ever built in North America.

Stage 1: Past this point flowed the Wabash and Erie Canal begun in 1832 and dedicated July (A), 1843 at Fort Wayne. In its final phase, the canal extended 459 miles from Maumee Bay at Toledo through New Haven, southwestward to Lafayette and thence to the Ohio River at Evansville. It was abandoned in 1874 and the last boat was seen on the canal in 18(B)2. Stage 2: Wabash and Erie Canal lock was discovered here June 199(C) during excavation for highway construction. It was built 183(D)-1840 by Henry Lotz and named for lock keeper Joseph Gronauer. The rare, well-preserved timber-frame design lock measured 115 by 40 feet; lock chamber was (E)0 by 15 feet; two-thirds of total structure was excavated and removed. Numerous artifacts and 750 pieces of timber were recovered. After extensive preservation treatment, approximately (F) percent of total lock structure is included in an Indiana State Museum exhibit. Wabash and Erie Canal, America's longest at approximately (G)60 miles, linked Lake Erie at Toledo, Ohio with Ohio River at Evansville 1853. Stage 3: I really wanted to place the cache on Canal Street (to flow with the theme of the cache), but there is no real good spot to place the cache, so the final location is my 2nd choice. Final Coords are N 41 0F.C2B W 08A 5D.E3G

UPDATE!!!! THE SIGN AT STAGE 2 IS MISSING!!!! HERE IS WHAT IT SAYS " SIDE 1    Wabash and Erie Canal lock was discovered here June 1991 during excavation for highway construction.
