From 1934-1955 Christian Petersen was Iowa State's sculptor-in-residence. For his second major work of art, he created the Veterinary Mural to to depict the services the veterinary profession performs in conserving the life and health of domestic animals, thereby safeguarding the health of humans. It was designed for its original placement in the courtyard wall of the Veterinary Medicine Quadrangle, where Petersen's mural would remind students and faculty of the professional achievements and goals of their curriculum in veterinary medicine.
Petersen added a central figure to enhance the theme of man's dependence on animals - and their dependence on him. The Gentle Doctor became the most important and most well-known of Petersen's campus sculptures. Reflecting the doctor's devotion, and the significance of life for all creatures, it is internationally recognized as an icon of veterinary medicine.
