Geocache Description:

Click for Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts Forecast

Echo Bridge/Hemlock Gorge, Needham/Newton Upper Falls.

This cache is at Echo Bridge in the Hemlock Gorge Reservation. It is a beautiful park on both sides of the Charles River between Needham and Newton Upper Falls. The terrain varies from flat to sharp rock ledges overlooking the river and the dam at Newton Upper Falls. Echo Bridge rises 60 feet above the river and encloses the aqueduct that carries water to Boston from the Quabbin Reservoir. Tall Hemlocks line the hills overlooking the Charles. From Echo Bridge, which is accessible from both sides of the river, you get a great view of the falls and river flowing north towards Route 9. On the east side of the riverbank, there is a walkway and stairway to an observation deck directly under the bridge. From this deck you can easily understand why it is called "Echo" Bridge. Echoes reverberate many times off the arched bridge and banks. See how many echoes you can hear before the sound fades away!

The cache is a micro cache with an official Geocaching.com micro-logbook. 2¼ inch finder's buttons are available, indicating that the geocacher has located the Echo Bridge cache site. E-mail me if you'd like one sent to you.

See our web site for pictures and maps of the Hemlock Gorge area.

Where to Park: Hemlock Gorge Reservation is located on the Charles River between Newton Upper Falls and Needham. To get there, take Route 128 (I-95) to Route 9 East and get off at the first exit (Newton Upper Falls). Turn right at the stop sign onto Ellis Street and right again at the next stop sign onto Chestnut Street. Turn right at the first traffic light onto Elliot Street (Central Ave. in Needham). Parking is off of Hamilton Place (first right after crossing the Charles River, Lat/Long: 42 18.745 W, 71 13.657 N). That is a small parking area but it is the nearest to the observation deck. There are plenty of parking spots nearby if that's full. (See the road and trail map on our web site)
