Epomeotuff

Tuff ist eine übergeordnete Bezeichnung für verfestigtes pyroklastisches Material aller Korngrößen. Die Partikel werden bei einer Eruption in die Luft geschleudert und fallen dann wieder herunter, wo sie durch die Temperatur von ca. 300°C, welche sie noch haben, miteinander verschmolzen werden.

Daher wurden Tuffe früher gerne als Mauersteine und Tuffziegel verarbeiten. Aufgrund seiner (durch Gaseinschlüsse hervorgerufenen) dämmenden Eigenschaft wird er gerne als Baumaterial verwendet. Vor allem in der Gegend um Rom und Neapel, wo der so genannte Peperin schon im Altertum als Baumaterial verwendet wurde, lassen sich auch heute noch viele Gebäude finden, die aus diesem Tuff errichtet wurden.
