Geocache Description:

Parramatta Gaol sits abandoned in the residential area of Parramatta. The huge stone walls house many fascinating stories and a rich history for those who bother look beyond the walls.

Congratulations to iFeelU for FTF

Parramatta Gaol was first established in 1798 and was located closer to the heart of Parramatta where the Riverseide Theatre currently stands. This current site opened in 1842 and was eventually decommissioned in 2011.

While there were many notable prisoners 2 in particular that caught my attention

Michael Murphey & Tony Lannigan - Arranged for other inmates to dig a tunnel out of the prison so they could escape. They worked tirelessly on the tunnel, 24hrs a day for 18months. Murphey was so excited that he was finally getting out, he called home to Grandma to let her know he would see he tomorrow. Confused by this news, Grandma called the prison to confirm and her inquiries into Murphy's release date alerted the guards to the possible escape. They locked the prison down and searched, until they found the tunnel.

What fascinates me the most is that 2011 when it was decommissioned, the guards and prisoners just walked out leaving everything behind. Inside these giant sandstone walls is a time capsule into the previous life of the Gaol itself.
