Welcome to the Gary Aquatorium

A what? An Aquatorium is a place where one goes to view water. If you're wondering if aquatorium is a made up word, you are correct. The building you are now looking at used to be called the Gary Bath House. The Chanute Aquatorium Society made up the word aquatorium so that people would stop thinking of it as a bathhouse.

If you head up the stairs you will get a beautiful view of Lake Michigan and the beach.

The aquatorium originally opened in 1922. It had a good run, but eventually closed in 1971. After sitting for several year the building was going to be demolished, but the Chanute Aquatorium Society stepped in to save it. Over the years they have raised money and done an excellent job to restore this cool old building.

After finding the cache, I invite you to walk around the aquatorium and read some of the other plaques and learn about some of the history surrounding this structure and area.

To find the cache look at the plaque located near the posted coordinates.

If the date on the plaque is the 25th of November, the north coordinates are N 41 37.180
If the date is the 30th of October, the north coordinates are N 41 37.155

If the year on the plaque is 1991, the west coordinates are W 087 15.353
If the year is 1994, the west coordinates are W 087 15.444
