Zil Kale (Zir Kale)
Zilkale, denizden 750 metre dere yatağından ise 100 metre yüksekligindedir.
Osmanlı dönemindeki adı Zir Kale olup aşağı kale anlamına gelmektedir. Kalenin ilk kez Rize Kalesi ile eş zamanlı olarak 5 ve 6. Yüzyıllarda ahşap bir yapıyla inşa edildiği tahmin edilmektedir. Taş temelli mevcut kale 13. Yüzyılda yapılmış olup dış durlar orta avlu ve 4 katlı olan iç surlardaan oluşur. Bizans döneminde doğu yönünden gelebilecek tehlikelere karşı bir gözetleme kalesi olarak kullanılmıştır. Osmanlı döneminde ticari ve askeri açıdan önemli olan doğu yolunun gözetlenmesi ve ticaret kervanlarının konaklaması amacıyla hizmet etmiştir. Kale-i Bala, Ciha Kalesi, Pazar Kız kalesi ve Rize Kalesinden oluşan 4 önemli haberleşme merkezi arasında kilit noktada yer almaktadır.
Zir Kale ile ilgili yazılı kaynaklarımız sınırlıdır. Bu yüzden başka kalelerde var olan bazı yaşam biçimlerinin burada da uygulandığını var sayıyoruz. Kale personeli 26 ile 40 kişi arasında değişiklik göstermiştir. 1 kale komutanı, 1 dizdar ve 1 muhafız ve askerlerin yanı sıra 1 aşçı ve yardımcılarının su taşımakla görevli bazı kişilerin olduğunu söyleyebiliriz. Kalenin içme suyu yaklaşık 700 metre batıda bulunan dereden sağlanmış olmalı. Ayrıca küçük bir su deposu inşa edilmiş ve yağmur suları burada biriktirilerek burada kullanılmıştır. Su deposunun mutfak ve banyoya yakın olması içme suyu olarak değil mutfak suyu olarak da banyo da da kullanılmak üzere biriktirildiği fikri uyandırılmaktadır. Yaz aylarında edinilen yiyeceklerin uygun alanlarda depolandığı ve kışın ulaşımın zor olduğu dönemlerde kullanıldığı sanılmaktadır. Gözetleme pencerelerinin doğuya konuşlandırılmış olması nedeniyle kalenin doğu yönü ile ilgili kaygılar üzerine inşa edildiği anlaşılmaktadır. Bu yönde güvenlik sağlandıktan sonra ise ticari açıdan önem kazanan doğu bölgesiyle ticaret yapılmaya başlanmış ve kale dışarıdan gelen ziyaretçilere sığınma sağlamıştır. Yukarı kale anlamına gelen Kale-i Bala ile Rize kalesi arasında iletişim sağlanmasında etkin rol oynamıştır. Özellikle güvenlik amaçlı olarak doğudan gelecek olan bir tehdit ilk olarak Kale-i Balada görülmüş ve Zir Kale aracılığıyla Rize merkeze haber ulaştırılmıştır. Bu açıdan kale bölge tarihi üzerinde ticari ve askeri açıdan önem taşımaktadır.
Cache kalenin dışındadır. Kaleye giriş ücreti 3 TL dir. Kale 15 yaş altı ve 65 yaş üstü için ücretsizdir. Ziyaret saatleri 08:00-19:00’dır.

Zil Castle (Zir Castle)
Zil Castle is at an altitude of 750 meters from the sea and 100 meters up the river ban.
The castle came to be known as Zir Kale during the Ottoman times, which means a lower castle. It is estimated that the castle was originally built of wood around the same time as the Rize Castle in the 5-6th century. The castle, built on a stark rock base, is believed to have been constructed in the 13th century and consists of outer walls, middle walls, and inner ramparts. The castle functioned as a watchtower and security checkpoint against possible threats from the east during the Byzantine period. The Ottomans used the castle fort the purpose of accommodating tradesmen and controlling the traditional silk road which held great commercial and military importance in the region. The castle also strategically played a crucial role as a communıcation center among other centers in the region like the Rize castle, Pazar Maiden castle, Bala castle, and Ciha castle.
There are very few first-hand sources related to life in the castle. Therefore we tend to assume that life in the castle was more or less similar to that of other identical castles. The number of personnel varied from 26 to 40. There was at least one commander one constable. A number of guards and soldiers apart from cooks and other personnel in charge of supplying water. Drinking water was provided from a river, 700 meters North of the castle. Besides, a small water tank was built in order to store rainwater. The close proximity of the tank to the kitchen suggests that stored water was used in the kitchen and in the bathroom. Other kitchen supplies and food that were harvested during the summer were also stored in the depot and used in winter when road transport was virtually impossible. The fact that loopholes were located in. The eastern section of the castle shows that the castle might have been built in order to eliminate possible threats coming from the east. After necessary security and order were restored, trade contacts were established with the east which gained commercial significance. In this sense, the castle provides some sort of sanctuary for the rich visitors making trade in the region. The castle also played an important role in maintaining communication between Bala castle, meaning upper castle, and Rize castle. Whilst Bala castle played the role of dealing with the threats coming from the east. Zil castle played the role of passing all sorts of information on to the central authorities in Rize castle. In that sense, the castle held a significant place in the history of the region militarily and commercially.
The Geocache is in out of the castle. The entrance fee to the castle is 3 TL. The castle is free for the age under 15 and over 65. Visiting hours are 08:00-19:00
