The cache is placed near the 10th Lock on the Royal Canal. This area is very popular as there is a restaurant and a pub there and a lovely wide towpath. It is therefore very busy at all times and even in all weathers.
The Royal Canal Company was established in 1789 to construct a canal to provide freight and passenger transport between Dublin and the River Shannon. Construction began with the laying of the first stone of the lock at Phibsborough (now the 5th lock) in 1790 and construction was completed to Ashtown by 1792.
The bridge here is the Longford Bridge, named after Lord Longford who invested in the Royal Canal Company.
