Corrigin Town of Windmills
Before the Goldfields Pipeline was built, Corrigin had over 50 windmills which were used to access the natural groundwater beneath the town. Each windmill pumped between 2500 and 5000 litres per day, equating to 170,000 litres per day overall!
In 1961 the town was connected to the Mundaring Weir pipeline and most of the windmills were deconstructed. An unintended consequence was that the underground water supply was no longer being used, and the water table began to rise. This created waterlogging within the town, with salt deposits being left on the surface. It became so serious that the local hotel even had to pump out water from its cellar!
