La torre di Martinsicuro o torre di Carlo V, si trova sulla costa dell'Adriatico, in provincia di Teramo, vicino alla foce del Tronto, nel comune di Martinsicuro.
La torre fu parte del vasto sistema di avvistamento e difesa delle torri costiere del Regno di Napoli, creato per porre un freno alla crescente minaccia di incursioni da parte dei Saraceni. Da ogni torre era possibile scrutare il mare e vedere di solito le due adiacenti, con la possibilità di inviare segnali luminosi e di fumo per trasmettere un messaggio o richiedere soccorso. Nel XVI secolo, quando Carlo V era Imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero e, tra l'altro, re di Napoli, il corso inferiore del fiume Tronto segnava il confine tra il Regno di Napoli a sud e lo Stato della Chiesa a nord. Per volere del viceré Don Pedro di Toledo nel 1547 si costruì la torre, come posto di guardia e difesa della costa dalle incursioni saracene e corsare, ed anche l'edificio adiacente, destinato a dogana del confine con lo Stato Pontificio, in funzione fino al 1860. La progettazione fu affidata al capitano ed architetto militare di Carlo V, il valenciano Pedro Luis Escrivà, mentre la realizzazione fu diretta dal capitano Martin De Segura dal quale presero il nome sia il centro abitato che la stessa torre. Dal punto di vista architettonico, si tratta di una imponente costruzione in laterizio, a base quadrangolare. Bellissima è l'edicola della facciata che racchiude le insegne araldiche dell'imperatore Carlo V (l'aquila bicipite degli Asburgo). Torri come questa costellano gran parte delle coste dell'Italia meridionale e sono spesso interessanti dal punto di vista architettonico; si svilupparono più o meno contemporaneamente a quelle che venivano fatte costruire negli altri stati della penisola italiana, tuttavia, essendo il Regno di Napoli la parte più protesa nel Mediterraneo e la più esposta alle scorrerie, qui si trovano una enorme quantità e varietà di esempi.

The tower of Martinsicuro or Charles V tower is located on the Adriatic coast, near the mouth of the Tronto river, in Martinsicuro's territory. The tower was part of a wide system of sighting and defense: the coastal towers of the Kingdom of Naples. This was created to slow down the rising threat of incursions by the Saracens. From each tower it was possible to watch over the sea and see the two adjacent towers, with the possibility to send messages or rescue requests by light and smoke signals. In the 16th century when Charles V was Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and, among other things, King of Naples, the lower course of the River Tronto marked the border between the Kingdom of Naples to the south and the State of the Church to the north. By the Viceroy Don Pedro of Toledo, in 1547, the tower was built as a coast guard from the Saracen raids, and also the neighboring building, destined for border customs with the State of the Church, running until the 1860. The design job was given to the captain and military architect of Charles V, the Valencian Pedro Luis Escrivá, while the execution was directed by Captain Martin De Segura from which they named the town and the same tower. From an architectural point of view, this is an imposing brickwork, quadrangular. Beautiful is the facade that encloses the heraldic insignia of Emperor Carlo V (the eagle of the Habsburgs). Towers like this stretch out much of the coasts of southern Italy and are often interesting from an architectural point of view; They all have been built more or less at the same time as those that were built in other states of the Italian peninsula, however, since the Kingdom of Naples was the most prominent part of the Mediterranean and the most exposed to raids,a huge quantity of examples are present.
