Geocache Description:

BEWARE OF CLIFFS NEAR GZ!! Washaway Beach is a rugged and secluded beach that sits between Crater Cove and Castle Rock beach on Grotto Point. It is surrounded by 20m high sandstone cliffs that have been carved by high energy waves. During high tide, the beach is hidden, or 'washed away', as the name suggests. It is not quite on the Manly to Spit Scenic Walkway, but only a short detour off it. The beach was once a nudist beach and you can still spot nudists bathing in these rough waters from time to time. Grotto point was named by Lieutenant Bradley and Captain Hunter in 1788 during their first exploration of the harbour. The 8m high lighthouse at the end of the headland was built in 1911 to guide ships through the harbour heads. The area was used by indigenous Australians and you can still see some evidence of their habitation in the form of rock art, shell middens and axe sharpening grooves. The best access to this cache is via the walking trail starting at Barrabooka St, however you can also come from either direction along the Manly to Spit scenic walkway. As you're walking towards the end of the headland, you'll see a yellow arrow pointing right. This leads to the lighthouse. Do not follow it! Instead take the path opposite, leading you to Washaway Beach. The cache is hidden atop the cliffs above the northern end of the beach. No bushbashing is required and you don't need to search the vertical face of the cliff! Not reccomended for geokids as they might fall! Room for small swaps and $2 for FTF!
