JCRC Tilton Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

m&jbike: After arguing with my conscience I have decided that it is not worth worrying about someone out where they could be bothered by livestock. I love this cemetery but have decided to archive it for the safety of everyone.

Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of caches that will take you to some of the small rural cemeteries in Jackson County Iowa. They are not designed to be P&G so as the description leads you around the cemetery take time to look at the stones and consider the lives and times of those who have gone before us.

Please be respectful, do not hunt at night, do not disturb mourners, and leave this peaceful and revered place in good condition. Remember to practice CITO, always. Thank You

LIVESTOCK HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN PASTURE. ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK.

The Maquoketa Sentenel-Press in the June 3 , 2017 issue printed a story about the restoration of pioneer cemeteries. The following information is from that article.

This cemetery had been part of a pasture for many years. When the Jackson County Pioneer Cemetery Commission began restoration there were only 3 stones still standing. When restoration was completed the commission had documented 82 burials, many in unmarked graves. Many stones had become buried because of cattle moving across the pasture. Only 45 grave stones were found and restored.

The cemetery has had several names over the years but is now known as Tilton, the name of the family that owned the land in the early 1900s. The  first recorded burial was in 1853 and the last is believed to have been in 1954, but no marker was placed on the grave. The most recent varified burial was in 1932.

The cemetery includes the remains of Goerge Cameron, a veteran of the War of 1812. Also Nathaniel L. Thomas, a veteran of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), and 2 veterans of the Civil War, John Baird and Thomas B. McDonald.

The cash is not located at the posted coordinates. We recorded the distance from the parking coordinates to the cemetery entrance to be 0.33 miles.
