New Notton Navigation is a circular walk. The walk is about 5 miles long with part on disused railway, part on paths and one road to cross. It takes just over 2 hours as a walk. It can get muddy during the winter months.
Don’t forget to bring a pen/pencil to sign the logs. Some hints are given but may be cryptic.
The village of Notton is listed as the Villata De Notton in the Doomsday book, compiled whilst England was under Norman rule in 1086. The village is registered as 6 carucates of land worth 20 shillings. The place name Notton means wether sheep farm (old English hnoc meaning wether sheep and old English tun meaning enclosure). The village has been a holding, a township and back to a village in more recent times. Historically, two very different, labour intensive occupations were undertaken in this area, farming and coal mining.
Mining in the area developed in the mid nineteenth century with the accompanying industries of brickworks, coking plant and gas works built on site. The railways and canals also played a large part in the transportation of coal. Virtually all of this industry has now disappeared. The footpaths, towpaths and disused railways tracks that remain make for ideal walking, cycling and of course geocaching!
New Notton Navigation (NNN) replaces Notton Navigation on a slightly different and longer walk with 22 caches. It is a circular, all season, boundary walk where South and West Yorkshire meet. Co-ords are given for parking at the start of the walk but there are other possible access points.
