A Treasure Island
This simple park and grab is situated between the Mt Roskill Library, an old fountain from the 1970s and a much more historic building, the old Three Kings Pumphouse.
The district's original water supply came from One Tree Hill but in 1911, the Mt Roskill Road Board's Water and Gas Committee called in water diviner and Anglican Minister the Rev Harry Mason, who determined in 1912 that "an underground river or reservoir of water would be found under the three Kings Hills." Construction of the pumphouse on this site was approved in 1915.
However in 1922, there was a typhoid outbreak in Mt Albert and the fact that a small municipal pumping station was involved convinced the authorities that the pumping station here should be shut down and the assets disposed of. The road board converted the building to the area's first community hall. By the 1950s the building was being used by the Auckland Boxing Club until it was taken over by the Mt Roskill Municipal Band. The building was restored in 1988 and is still used by the band's successors.

A library is a treasure island of sorts, this one was opened in the late 1970s and has recently been renovated. The centre is named after Richard (Dick) Fickling, who was mayor of the former Mt Roskill Borough Council between 1974 and 1987.
