(NB: researched and compiled by Melvin Brownless, with special thanks to Pat Burgess Collection, Andy Saunders, and the IWM for use of images.)

This cache remembers WW2 German pilot Unteroffizier Leo Zaunbrecher who, after he had taken off from an aerodrome near the coast of France at mid-day 12th August 1940 and had been flying at 19,500 ft, was wounded when he was attacked from the rear by a Spitfire. With the controls and petrol tank being shot away, he had to perform a forced landing in a field at Mays Farm, Berwick, at approximately 13.00 hours.

His plane as Messerschmitt Bf 109E-1 Werke/Nr.3367 from unit 2 Staffel./Jagdgeschwader 52.
On the port side of the plane there was a Red Devil with a bow and arrow, also a red triangle with two red rings below the machine gun port on the port side of the fuselage along with a 14 + in red. The aircraft was fitted with an armoured bulkhead.
