Geocache Description:

There used to be a previous cache here at this iconic monument years ago and I thought it was time for another to give passing geocachers something to do to break up a journey on the A11. You can park in the laybys on either side of the dual carriageway then follow the footpath signs to the monument.

Elveden Monument is a war memorial to those who died from the parishes of Elveden, Eriswell and Icklingham in the First World War. It stands on the north side of the A11 trunk road in Suffolk, at the point where the three parishes meet. It consists of a 39m high Corinthian column comprised of a base, pedestal, shaft and capital in Weldon stone with a Portland stone funerary urn at the top. Edward Cecil Guinness, owner of Elveden Hall, commissioned the architect Clyde Francis Young to design and build the column which took 2 years to erect and was completed in 1921. It was listed in 1954 and is now a Grade 2 listed structure. After admiring the monument, to find the cache you need to go through the metal gate. Please replace exactly as found.
