Geocache Description:

This is part of a group of 4 caches around York that will take you to visit WWII airfields, some are in working order and others returning to nature. The cache is easily accessible from the small road that runs down to the crash gate. There is a small area in which you can park about 100m from the gate on your right. The cache is a very full 1.25L container wrapped in a black dustbin bag. The name of the cache “LOO” refers to the morse code callsign used by the main radio beacon that identifies the airfield. RAF Linton-on-ouse opened in 1937, it was used during the war for heavy bombers like the Halifax and Lancaster. It is now one of the busiest airfields in the RAF hosting No. 1 Flying Training School which operates no fewer than 78 Tucanos providing basic flying instruction. . If you visit the cache during normal flying hours 9-5 Mon – Fri there is a very good chance you will see Tucano aircraft flying close to you, stand at the crash gate and you can see most of the airfield. For another angle, if you follow the road from Youlton towards Aldwark bridge, turning left to Linton-on-ouse you will find a viewing area close to the action at the other end of the runway.

This is currently the 35 oldest cache in Yorkshire.
