Geocache Description:

Superb trail will provide about an hour and a half hike all told along the Dunk River flood plain.

NOTE: This cache used to be reached via two bridges over a small river/stream. Both bridges are now out, making the terrain much more difficult. The below listing is for the trail in its previous condition, I hope to get to it in another week or so and update the trail and routing. For now: be prepared to portage if you try this trail in the direction indicated.

This trail is an absolute gem, one of the best little hiking trails I have ever seen on PEI. Because of the trail, however, there's really only one way to hunt this cache, which is along the trail. Don't leave the trail, because the area around it is sensitive in places and off-limits in others.

Come into Breadalbane on Highway 231, noting the community park, picnic tables, and swings. Park at the former site of Pomroy Murray's dam, at N 46 21.409 W 63 30.057

Across the dam you will see a stairway, that's the trail's beginning.

The trick of finding this cache is not so much following your GPS as it is following the trail. The first 30 minutes are the roughest part of trail, take water and bug spray and have good boots. Be especially careful as you get near N 46 21.387 W 63 29.610, the ground slopes and you don't want to turn an ankle.

The real delight comes a bit past there. At N 46 21.193 W 63 29.572 you will come upon a surprise. Take it, you will need it to complete your quest. Round about the time you spot its twin, you will be quite close, but don't touch the twin until you find the cache - you need it instead to take you home.

The cache is less than 3 meters off the trail, absolutely no bushwhacking required.

Once you've found the cache, the best and easiest way is to continue ahead along the trail, the second half of it is absolutely magical, lots of delights. I'm very interested in seeing if others were as struck with the place as I was. When you get to N 46 21.297 W 63 29.396, after you use it, hang a left, and you should come in a nice circle.

Because of the facing of some of the markers on the trail, it is really recommended that you follow it counter-clockwise as I've suggested here. Mark your route on the GPS as you go. You should eventually find yourself on a major trail leading back to the park. You can picnic there or at a number of stops along the trail.

Trail difficulty is given for summer and fall, in spring you'd need heavy waterproof boots and lots of slogging, in winter the trail will be harder to follow in places.

Remember, the quest is to let the trail take you to the magic. Don't let your GPS take you off the trail.

I do the route in about an hour and fifteen minutes, but I know the trail. It's a great spot to take the family as long as your kids aren't too young.
