This virtual cache is located in a quiet part of Thorney Island where you will discover two memorial benches to two servicemen killed in the service of this country. They are situated on a small area of grass, looking out to Emsworth Channel. Both benches have ammunition boxes next to them, secured on a post. Inside these boxes are Books of Remembrance, including photos of the two men, so you can sit and contemplate the loss of these men and so many others.
The footpath around Thorney Island offers splendid views and lots of opportunities for bird-watching. There is also an excellent Church Micro cache - Church Micro 4967...West Thorney
There is free parking for about 15 cars in Prinsted at N 50° 50.404 W 000° 54.846. There is no parking on the base unless you know someone on site who can sign you in.
You will be required to pass through a CCTV-controlled security gate when you reach the Army base perimeter. In the past, the MoD has taken the name and address of visitors before granting access, but at the time of publication of this cache it appears that this practice has ceased. However, during times of heightened security alert it is entirely possible that security will be tightened, or access forbidden. For further information on access call 01243 388269.
While within the base perimeter, do not approach, touch or pick up any metal objects lying on the ground. Please obey all signs and posted information.
To log this virtual you must the visit the coordinates listed. To claim your find you must:
1. Sit on or stand near either of the benches and take a photo of the other. Upload this picture to the cache page with your log. Please ensure that the signs described in part 2 are not included in the photo.
2. Near the benches are two warning signs. Send us the answers to the following questions via our profile:
