Geocache Description:

Per the Rural Historical Society, “It was the spring of 1852 when James H. Jones built his home (now known as The Halfway House because of its location halfway between Stevens Point and Berlin) in what eventually became the Village of Rural.” Since the mid-1800’s many more buildings have come and gone. But as so many originals still exist and have been well preserved, the Society was able to list the village on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Welcome to Rural

This virtual Geocache is available any time, but keep in mind most of these places are private residences. Please respect the families living here. This entire virtual may be easily completed without ever leaving your vehicle or the streets if on foot. No permission is given or to be assumed to enter any of these properties or their driveways.

The listed coordinates will bring you to the Village of Rural. It is a delightful place to visit, brimming with local history, loads of Americana, and beautiful photo ops year-round. The Crystal River winding through the villiage provides a pretty backdrop for this Historic District. Well over a dozen 150-year-old homes (like half the town) are labelled and in excellent condition. Even the new homes are designed and built to look old. Finding the various historical locations will take just a little while, it is a very small village, just a few streets and only a couple of blocks long and wide. But it is suggested that you allow yourself plenty of time to enjoy all the ambiance this place has to offer. The home’s info / identification signs are quite visible and readable from the roads.

To successfully log this Virtual Cache, take a tour of Rural by foot or vehicle. Then please send the cache owners answers to the following questions. Please do not include any of this in your online log, or post any photos that give away any answers!

1. What small recently built structure is in the front yard of the 1928 Rural Historical Society building?

2. Identify three (3) of the historical homes in Rural, with their posted date of build AND their Dayton Township fire number (green signs by driveways, start with either E or N)

EXAMPLE: John Q. Smith house, 1855, N1234

Feel free to log the cache once the requested info is sent. If there is a problem we will be in touch.
