Geocache Description:

Listed on the National Register of Historical Places, the Anamosa State Penitentiary is a maximum security institution housing approximately 950 offenders and employing over 300 staff members. The building is one of the more amazing structures in Iowa.

Beginning in 1873, this "Big House" was built by the inmates with limestone from nearby Stone City quarries. It was recognized as a masterpiece and known as the "White Palace of the West."

Post a picture showing your gps/smartphone with the Bicentennial Bell in the background. This is a fenced area near the posted coordinates and there is no need to leave the sidewalk.
