Geocache Description:

A figurehead is a carved decoration at the bow of a vessel. The design of the figuredhead is often related to the name of the vessel.

The STAR OF INDIA is one of the oldest ships in the world still capable of sailing. She was launched as EUTERPE on the Isle of Man in November, 1863. She made 21 circumnavigations of the world before finishing her working life in the Alaskan salmon trade. Her name was changed to STAR OF INDIA in 1906.

The figurehead for the STAR OF INDIA is Euterpe, the Muse of Lyric Poetry. This Muse is typically portrayed carrying a flute. The figurehead is carrying a flute but it is on the starboard side and not visible from the Embarcadero.

The ship SURPRISE was launched in 1970 as the ROSE, a replica of a 1757 British frigate that took part in the American War of Independence. In 2001, the ROSE was purchased by 20th Century-Fox and significantly altered to become the 1796 British frigate SURPRISE for the movie "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World".

When the ROSE was launched, her figurehead was large lion, one of the symbols of Great Britain. When the ROSE was altered to become the SURPRISE, one of the changes was to change the figurehead from the lion to Pallas Athena. In Greek mythology, Athena is the patron goddess of heroic endeavor. As Pallas Athena, she is typical garbed in armor and is brandishing a sword.

The steam yacht MEDEA was launched in 1904 as the private hunting yacht of the Scottish Lord Macalister Hall. She was purchase by the French and commissioned into the French Navy as an escort vessel in WWI. After reverting to civilian service between the wars, she was commissioned into the Royal Navy and later the Royal Norwegian Navy in WWII. (There are very few vessels remaining that have served through both World Wars.)

Medea was the the daughter of King Aeëtes of Colchis and granddaughter of the god, Helios. She is often depicted as a sorceress and priestess of the goddess Hecate.

The tops'l schooner CALIFORNIAN was launched in 1984 as a replica of the United States Revenue Cutter C.W. LAWRENCE, the only federal presence on the West Coast from 1848 to 1851. The CALIFORNIAN is the official tall ship of the state of California.

The figurehead of CALIFORNIAN is the warrior queen, Califia, who ruled the mythical island of California. The model for this figurehead was the actor, Catherine Bach.
