Geocache Description:

The Navesink Military Reservation Virtual Reward Cache

Welcome to Battery Lewis! Over the past several years the battery has slowly been restored so that it could be opened once again to the pubic. It started in 2015 when a surplus gun barrel weighing over 120 tons made its way from the Battleship New Jersey across the state by train, crane and truck to Hartshorne Woods park and Battery Lewis. An extended history of the military reservation is detailed below but to log this virtual you will only need to find that surplus Navy Mark 7 gun barrel. You will find a small screw mounted plaque somewhere near the breach cautioning you about proper storage of the screw pin for hole "B". Email or Message me where it must be kept as proof you visited the site. Alternately you may post a picture of you or your GPSr at Battery Lewis along with your log. Enjoy the history, hiking and hides of Hartshorne!

In case you scanned past it above: To log this virtual cache find the Mark 7 Gun Barrel then find the tiny "caution" plaque near the breach. Email or message me where it should be kept. You can also include a picture of yourself or your GPSr at the site. Happy hunting!

Special thanks to Gail Hunton, Supervising Historic Preservation Specialist, Monmouth County Park System who collected much of the information above. This was based on additional research for the Navesink Military Reservation National Register Nomination, and on other sources including Bolling Smith, Coast Artillery Historian; Mark Berhow, Coast Defense Study Group; Cory Newman; John Martini; Joe Hammond; Tom Hoffman, National Park Service, Fort Hancock; Fort Hancock Archives; National Archives and Records Administration, New York and College Park, MD; and Dennis Bertland.
