24th June 2022 - new CO and new task! Your GPS will lead you to the secret garden of Regent’s Park, known as St John’s Lodge Garden. The garden is open daily from 07:00 until dusk.
The task for this Virtual cache is very simple. Take a photo yourself in the garden or of the garden that can conclusively prove that you visited on the day that you log your find. Post your photo/s with your find log.
Occasionally, the garden is closed, often due to prolonged wet conditions. The task then is to take a photo at the locked front gates.
No “Armchair logs” and be aware that the CO can identify pictures that are not in season with the date of your log.
Just follow your arrow through Regent’s Park, which is a worthy a visit in its own right. The picture above is your hint that leads to the secret garden. I won’t describe the garden itself here but leave you in awe when you observe it for yourself.
A brief historic timeline of St John’s Lodge and garden
1818 - St John’s Lodge built in open countryside
1822 - John Nash’s grand design for Regent’s Park commenced
1847 - St John’s Lodge was enlarged by architect, Charles Barry, of Houses of Parliament fame
1914 - Became a hospital during the First World War for disabled officers
1928 - The garden itself came under the care of the gardeners of Regent’s Park and opened to the public
1948 - Nearby Bedford College took ownership of building becoming a student hall of residence
1987 - Rebuilt extensively after Bedford College vacated
1994 - The Brunei Royal Family made further changes and created a new entrance to the garden with the present-day arbour walk, therefore not to compromise their privacy. The original entrance to the garden was up their front driveway
2006 - goldpot placed the first cache in the secret garden, GCV885
2017 - Unobtainium placed his Virtual cache here
2022 - goldpot adopted the Virtual
