Please read this description carefully.
This virtual cache brings you to the summit of Maunganui in the heart of the Akatarawa Forest. There is no container or logbook to find at this amazing place, instead you are required to provide proof of your visit in a different way.
This cache is located in remote forest, and to reach it will require careful navigation and trail-finding. The trails in this part of the forest are largely unmapped and un-named and finding a route will be challenging.
We would expect anybody attempting the cache to be confident in this sort of environment, to be suitably equipped, and to be aware of all the precautions necessary before embarking on this sort of a back-country expedition.
Maunganui is located at 708m altitude, and at the summit you are rewarded with incredible views across the forest in all directions and out across the ocean to Kapiti Island.
It is not our intention to specify a route for visitors to take to the cache, but we have included parking waypoints which might serve as suitable starting points.
Please remember that this is a difficult exercise in navigation and that you will be traveling at times along narrow trails through dense forest where it will be all too easy to take a wrong turn and become lost. A device equipped with offline OpenStreetMap (OSM) maps will assist greatly with navigation as these maps show some of the tracks in the forest.
There is only occasional cellphone reception in the forest and visitors are strongly encouraged to let somebody know where they are going and when they expect to be back.
Make sure you go prepared – take a good drink and some warm clothing as the weather can change very rapidly and is often very different to that on the coast or in Wellington.
To prove that you have visited the cache please send us a message describing any small man-made feature that you may have found at the given coordinates to mark the summit. Also please take a photo of the view from the summit including either yourself or your gps device, and include this photo in your online log.
