Geocache Description:

A family friendly, virtual geocache at Fort Anne, Annapolis Royal that will give you a 'first hand insight' into the reasons why this site is one of the most fought over places in North America!

....It’s been a long time since I first set foot here. But, from where you are standing right now you can see all the reasons for people wanting to fortify this place! If you controlled this place, you controlled the land! Remember, there were no roads… it was across the water that we traveled best! To the west you see the Annapolis Basin with access to the Bay of Fundy and New England, to the north the Annapolis River and all it’s fertile land upstream!

By the way, if you want to log this virtual geocache, you will have to email the cache owner the answers to the questions posed in this cache description. I run a tight ship – if you don’t tow the line, we’ll maroon your log! Anyway, the first question is “Who am I?” You’ll find the answer on the statue of me that you probably already walked by. It's near the main entrance to the fort and you can see it from ground zero off to the left when facing the officers quarters.

Back to the history of this place... You probably find it hard to imagine that the town behind the fort served as the capitol for first Acadia and later all of Nova Scotia (which for a while included New Brunswick and PEI) until the founding of Halifax in 1749. It really was an important place, and so, it had to be protected. As you walk around the site you’ll see evidence that this indeed was a military installation. Earthen works, canons and canon-balls galore! How many canons are there in the immediate vicinity of ground zero?

This place has been fought over; there were skirmishes and blockades, and control over the site changed several times between the French and the British. All this tension required there to be ample of gun powder to fight off the enemy! Some time after I passed on they build an actual gun powder magazine out of stone! You will see it to the right when you face the officer’s quarters from ground zero. What year was it built?

Answer the above questions, and upload a picture of you or your GPS (if you're willing) but for sure of the officer’s quarters from the posted coordinates, and you can log this virtual geocache. I would love it if you take a moment and share in your log something that impresses you about Fort Anne. I hope you take some time to read the interpretive signs that are available during the tourist season and that you enjoy this place as much as I did when I arrived in the early 1600s…
