5 de noviembre de 2016 (día 23) Foncebadón a Ponferada ... Fue una pequeña caminata de 2 km desde Foncebadón hasta la famosa cruz, Cruz de Fierro, donde los peregrinos tradicionalmente dejan una pequeña piedra que llevan consigo, que representa un aspecto de su vida que buscan concluir o cerrar. Por más que lo intenté, no pude pensar en problemas o cargas sin resolver de las que necesitara liberarme emocionalmente, así que no dejé nada detras mí en el monumento. Aun así, fue una experiencia muy emotiva ver el enorme montículo de piedras que otros habían dejado atrás. Como para mostrar la naturaleza íntima de las súplicas que quedan en este lugar, mi iPhone eligió ese momento exacto para morir. "No más fotos", parecía que era el mensaje que estaba recibiendo. No, no fue una experiencia mística... Demasiado húmeda y demasiado fría para serlo; sólo una combinación de factores, que hicieron que mi iPhone pensara que su batería estaba agotada. Volvió a la vida después de secarse y calentarse en el bolsillo interior de mis pantalones impermeables, pero no antes de perderme muchas fotos preciosas por la montaña. Así que sólo puedes creer lo que te cuente: que los helechos de anarajado ardiente contra el verde intenso de los pinos eran absolutamente increíbles; y que es una lástima que no pueda enseñarte el vídeo de las olas de niebla que atravesaban los bosques de árboles cubiertos de liquen verde pálido, que desaparecían en la niebla de la montaña. O, cuando finalmente descendimos bajo la niebla para ver el pueblo de abajo ... Espera, parece que mi teléfono resucitó en ese momento. En cualquier caso, fue otro día terriblemente maravilloso. De hecho, uno de los mejores hasta ahora.

5 November, 2016 (Day 23) Foncebadon to Ponferada... It was a short 2km hike from Foncebadon to the famous cross, Cruz de Fierro, where pilgrims traditionally leave a small stone they've carried with them representing some aspect of their life in which they are seeking closure. Try as I might, I could never think of any unresolved issues or burdens from which I needed emotional release, so I left nothing behind at the monument. Even so, it was a very emotional experience to see the enormous mound of stones others had left behind. As if to signify the very private nature of the offerings left at the site, my iPhone chose that exact moment to die. "No more photos," seemed to be the message I was receiving. No, it wasn't a mystical experience... just too wet and too cold – a combination of factors that cause my iPhone to think its battery is dead. It came back to life after I allowed it to dry out and warm up on the inside pocket of my rain pants, but not before I missed lots of beautiful photos on the mountain. So you'll just have to take my word for it that the fiery orange ferns set against the deep green of the pines were absolutely gorgeous, and it's too bad I can't show you video of the waves of mist blowing across the groves of shaggy pale green lichen-covered trees disappearing into the fog of the mountain. Or when we finally descended below the fog to a view of the village below... wait, I think my phone had come back to life by then. At any rate, it was another miserable wonderful day. In fact, one of the best so far.
