Kartanontyttärestä kasvoi äpärälasten auttaja – Alva Forsiuksen sydän sykki yhteiskunnan hylkiöille
Alva Forsius (1866–1935) oli suomalainen kätilö, sosiaalialan uudistaja ja Pelastusarmeijan toiminnan edelläkävijä Suomessa. Hän syntyi kartanoperheeseen, mutta omisti elämänsä yhteiskunnan vähäosaisille—erityisesti naimattomille äideille ja heidän lapsilleen, joita siihen aikaan pidettiin hylkiöinä.
Forsius perusti Porvooseen synnytyssairaalan ja myöhemmin Solhem-nimisen äiti-lapsi-kodin, jossa yksinäiset äidit saivat turvaa ja apua. Kodissa opetettiin käytännön taitoja, kuten ompelua ja käsitöitä, jotta äidit voisivat elättää itsensä ja lapsensa. Forsius näki tärkeäksi seurata perheiden pärjäämistä myös kotiin palaamisen jälkeen.
Uskonnollisena ja sosiaalisesti valveutuneena ihmisenä Forsius toi Pelastusarmeijan toimintaa Suomeen ja edisti kristillisiin arvoihin perustuvaa auttamistyötä. Häntä pidetään radikaalina ja rohkeana naisena, joka haastoi aikansa käsityksiä naisen asemasta ja puolusti niitä, jotka muut olivat hylänneet.
Hänen perintönsä näkyy yhä Porvoossa, missä entinen äiti-lapsi-koti jatkaa toimintaansa Pelastusarmeijan päiväkotina, patsaan vastapäätä olevassa keltaisessa rakennuksessa. Entinen synnytyssairaala (punainen puurakennus patsaan takana) toimii nykyään retkeilymajana.

Alva Forsius (1866–1935) was a Finnish midwife, social reformer, and one of the pioneers of the Salvation Army’s work in Finland. Born into a manor family, she chose to dedicate her life to society’s outcasts—especially unmarried mothers and their children, who at the time were often treated as pariahs.
Forsius established a maternity hospital in Porvoo and later founded Solhem, a mother-and-child home that offered safety and support for single mothers. There, women received not only care after childbirth but also practical training in skills such as sewing and handicrafts to help them earn a living. Forsius also emphasized follow-up support, ensuring that mothers and their children were not abandoned after leaving the home.
A deeply religious and socially conscious person, Forsius helped bring the Salvation Army to Finland and promoted a form of social work rooted in Christian values. She is remembered as a radical and courageous woman who challenged prevailing attitudes toward women and fought for those whom society had cast aside.
Her legacy lives on in Porvoo, where the former mother-and-child home continues to serve the community as a Salvation Army daycare, in the yellow building opposite the statue. The former maternity hospital (the red wooden building behind the statue) now functions as a hostel.
