It is early in the morning and I am about to turn on the Quantum Field Generator and enter the portal. If my calculations are correct I will break through the 4th dimension and travel back in time to the year 1888. I will have only a few minutes before the quantum field collapses and I return to the present day. Right, enough talk, engage. Nothing for a moment, and then everything starts to spin. Faster and faster the world spins, I start shrinking, and then nothing but darkness….
I am standing outside the door of The Ten Bells as the sun is setting. What has gone wrong. I am here but only as a passenger. I start moving. Walking towards Brick Lane. Talking to strangers as I pass them by on the street, but no one replies. But it is not me walking or talking. I am just here looking out from behind someone else’s eyes. I, we, she, turns a few corners into Heneage Street, opens a door, and enters The Pride of Spitalfields.
The spinning fades. Something went wrong, very wrong. I did not go back in time but I did go somewhere. Now I am back in the Chew Valley but I have moved. The QFG is about 700m to the north. I’m standing at the southern end of Denny island. How on earth did I get here? Maybe my calculations were wrong. But I was so sure. If I can get back to the machine maybe I can work out why this has failed.
What! The sensation of spinning is returning. Why is this happening again? The machine, the portal, isn’t even here! The spinning grows stronger and, as before, everything fades….
I, we, exit the building. It seems much later now. There is no one around. We walk but I do not know where. Can she hear me? Hello! …. Nothing. We cross Commercial Road. Have I been here before. The name sounds familiar. Back Church Lane. She slows and comes to a stop. Its late, but she finds the door unlocked. She turns the handle and together we step inside.
The nausea fades and I am back again. Hopefully for good. But where am I now? I am in a dark locked room. A little light comes in through the small windows. Minutes pass and the sensation of spinning does not return. I search for a way out but the door is held fast and the windows are too small to get through.
No one hears my calls for help. Hours pass. Will anyone find me?
