Construída estrategicamente na margem norte do rio Tejo, entre 1514 e 1520, para defesa da barra de Lisboa, é uma das jóias da arquitectura do reinado de D. Manuel I.
No conjunto arquitectónico podemos separar dois corpos distintos, modelos da arquitectura militar: a torre de menagem medieval e o baluarte moderno que, com dois níveis para disparo de artilharia, permitia um tiro de maior alcance, rasante e em ricochete sobre a água. A Torre de Belém é um referente cultural, um símbolo da especificidade do país que passa pelo diálogo privilegiado com outras culturas e civilizações. Guardiã da nossa Individualidade e Universalidade, viu este estatuto confirmado quando, em 1983, foi classificada pela UNESCO como "Património Cultural de toda a Humanidade".
