Geocache Description:

This memorial is dedicated to the men and women who have faithfully served or are now serving in the Armed Forces of the United States. It honors and celebrates all who have answered this nation's call to duty.

As you enter beneath a wrought iron arch supported on granite pillars, you encounter a broad walkway with the flags of the branches of service running down the center. The flags are set in individual granite bases and flanked by granite benches. The outer edges of the walkway are defined by two rows of red granite pillars depicting in text and engraved images, historic moments in the military history of the United States. These pillars serve as educational markers to provide future generations with the knowledge, perspective and appreciation of the role veterans have played in securing and preserving the freedoms we all enjoy today. The educational component of this park is a major emphasis in its design and founding principles. Inlaid in this walkway are pavers recognizing individual veterans from all areas of the United States. These pavers will be a central fundraising effort for the construction of the Memorial Park. The walkway will open onto the Memorial Patio. This pentagonal shaped area is surrounded by flags of the VFW, American Legion, POW/MIA, the State of Wisconsin and anchored by the flag of the United States. These flags will be set in individual granite bases and can be flanked by granite benches. A large center piece will list the names of the Stoughton Area Veterans who were killed in action or missing in action. The center piece will have a granite depiction of the US flag in the center of the base and a large bronze statue of an American Eagle will crown this center piece. Radiating from the center to the five apexes of the pentagon will be a series of black granite markers which will be engraved with the names of all Stoughton Area Veterans. These markers will be divided by conflict era or peacetime and date back to the Civil War.
