Geocache Description:

Grandad Bluff Park in La Crosse WI has a beautiful scenic outlook. This lookout is the one place that we consistently bring our friends who come to visit us in Wisconsin to. From here you get a birdseye view of downtown La Crosse along with the mighty Mississippi river, the Black river as well as three states; Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. I hope you enjoy the view as much as we enjoy sharing it with you, so .... consider yourself a friend and enjoy the view!

Since I was given the honor to place a Virtual, I thought long and hard about the place that I would like others to come and enjoy and despite the many other possible options of wonderful places in the area to visit and place the virtual...this was the winner!!

The park has a gate and posted hours for the park. Park is CLOSED 10:30 PM to 6:00 AM.

This park opened in 1912. It has been a jewel in the park system with a wonderful view and access to several hiking trails, picnic areas and wonderful views. Grandad Bluff is part of the Hixon Forest, and prior to being a park it was used for quarrying and logging. Because of the devastating fires in downtown between 1857 and 1867, the city required new buildings be constructed of stone or brick. Many of the homes and infrastructure of La Crosse utilized the resources that have come from this bluff and the surrounding area. La Crosse is part of the Driftless Area; a region in Wisconsin, Minnesota, northwestern Illinois, and northeastern Iowa of the American Midwest that was never glaciated. The region covers an area of 24,000 square miles. The rugged terrain is due both to the lack of glacial deposits, or drift, and to the incision of the upper Mississippi River and its tributaries into bedrock.

To claim the Virtual please send me the following information:

1. What is the elevation of Virtual Stage 1? (As determined by your GPS)

2. What year did Mark Twain find this Choice Town when he traveled by steamboat and stopped in La Crosse?

3. Describe a landmark (really anything that catches your eye) that you can view from GZ of this Virtual Cache.

4. Pictures are optional but would be appreciated to see the people and view that you enjoyed and would like to share.

In fairness to all geocachers, any log that does not have the required verification will be deleted. So don't forget to send the information and please don't post the answers in your log. Enjoy!!
