Geocache Description:

I'm honoured to be granted one of the new virtual caches. This historic area of Coventry has always been of great interest to me since I visited as a child on a school trip. I have wanted to place a cache here but previous containers placed by other COs have tended to go missing and I have always been concerned about hiding tubes and canisters in busy City /tourist areas. So, an opportunity to present a short virtual tour around this historic area picking up some info on the way.

No part of this cache requires any entrance fees or interaction with staff however please note the cathedral ruins have iron gates which are opened at 9am and locked at 5pm.

Whilst an 8 stage cache may seem daunting, in reality you could visit all the stages and collect the information within about 20 minutes as the whole route is only about 700 metres however it took me about 3 hours when I set the cache as I got distracted by so many different things to explore. In fact I had to go round again to just concentrate on setting the cache.

At each stage you just need to collect a single letter as indicated below:

First Stage - COVENTRY BOY - My virtual tour starts here with this poignant little tribute under the shadow of the new cathedral with St Michael and the devil looking over you.- On the inscription (not including the title) you will need the last letter of the first word.

Second Stage - CHARRED CROSS - A particularly important piece of symbolism in the old cathedral ruins reminding us of the blitz and the City's subsequent regeneration. Look to your left when facing the cross . There is a plaque commemorating Marjorie's husband. You will need the last letter of his working position.

Third Stage - RECONCILIATION- A modern, thought provoking, addition to the old cathedral. From the main plaque you will need the second letter of the last paragraph.

Fourth Stage - St MARY'S GUILDHALL - A hidden Gem and well worth a visit and a look around in its own right. From the main plaque outside simply take the very first letter.-

Fifth Stage - HMS COVENTRY- A further reminder of Coventry’s losses in conflicts around the world. This plaque acknowledges the loss of life on HMS Coventry In the Falklands War. Take the 6th letter of the only month mentioned on the plaque.

Sixth Stage - HILL TOP PLAQUE- A brief history of the earliest development of this site. Take the third letter of the first word.

Seventh Stage - PRIORY - A peer into the depths of some uncovered history. There is some large silver lettering above the windows. Take the 5th letter of the last word.

Eighth Stage - COFA'S TREE - A relatively recent 'Time Team' assisted discovery of the City's ancient Cathedral. There is a plaque at the lower level at the coordinates. Not including the title you will need the first letter of the sixth word

This marks the end of my virtual tour. The letters you have collected should spell out an important name that you should have read about on your way round. To claim this virtual cache you need to email this name to me and post a photo of your gps device or yourself (face does not have to be included) at the virtual stage that you thought was the most interesting.
