La Mole Antonelliana - il monumento più importante di Torino nasce come sinagoga nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento. e prende il proprio nome dall'architetto Alessandro Antonelli.

Nel 1862 la comunità ebraica aveva comprato il terreno e aveva affidato il progetto della sinagoga ad Alessandro Antonelli, architetto novarese. Il quale dapprima aveva disegnato una costruzione a cupola alta 47 metri. Poi ci ripensò. E aumentò i metri, arrivando fino a 113. La lunghezza dei tempi e i costi elevati fecero nel 1869 interrompere i lavori per mancanza di fondi della comunità, con l’edificio incompleto e fermo ai 70 metri di altezza. L’altezza ed il terreno instabile costrinsero Antonelli ad ulteriori lavori per la sicurezza e nel 1873 la comunità ebraica, stanca dei tanti costi, decise di accordarsi col Comune di Torino, il quale diede loro un altro appezzamento di terreno e si fece carico dei costi dei lavori della Mole per dedicarla al Re Vittorio Emanuele II.

Oltre ad essere un punto panoramico d’eccellenza, è sede del Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino.

Si può salire in cima alla Mole Antonelliana con l'ascensore panoramico all'interno di cabina con pareti in cristallo trasparente, che effettua la sua corsa in un'unica campata a cielo aperto senza piani intermedi fino agli 85 metri del "tempietto" stesso dal quale si può ammirare una veduta aerea del magnifico scenario della città e le montagne che la rircondano.

The Mole Antonelliana – or simply “Mole”, for short – is the most important monument and major landmark building of Turin built in the second half of the nineteenth century and named after its architect, Alessandro Antonelli.

The Mole, though, was originally conceived and constructed as a Jewish synagogue. In 1863, during the brief four years in which Turin was the capital of a newly unified Italy (1861-1864), Turin’s Jewish community wanted to build a structure that would be the jewel of the new capital city. They hired Antonio Antonelli with a budget of 250,000 lira. But relationship between the Architect and the Jewish community was not good , due modifications proposals raising the final height to 113 meters, over 47 meters higher than in the original design. Such changes, in addition to greater costs and construction time, did not please the Jewish community and construction was halted in 1869 with a provisional roof. With the dislocation of the Italian capital from Turin to Florence in 1864, the community shrank, but costs and Antonelli's ambition continued to rise. In 1876 the Jewish community, which had spent 692,000 lire for a building that was still far from finished, announced that it was withdrawing from the project and and sold it to the municipality.

In addition to being an excellent panoramic spot, it is home to the National Cinema Museum of Turin.

You can access the top of the Mole Antonelliana with the panoramic lift inside a glass cabin, which runs open space inside tle Mole without intermediate floors up to 85 meters of the "temple" itself, where you can enjoy an panoramic view of the magnificent scenery of the city and the surrounding mountains .
