Beechwood Cemetery was established in 1873. It is set in 160 acres (65 hectares) that were, at that time, well outside city limits. It has a pastoral setting with rolling terrain, winding roadways, and irregularly shaped sections, interspersed with groves and gardens.
In 2001, Beechwood was designated a National Historic Site.
On April 23, 2009, Beechwood officially became Canada’s National Cemetery when the National Cemetery of Canada Act received Royal Assent.
Although members of the Canadian Forces have been buried in Beechwood for more than 100 years, it wasn’t until 2007 that Beechwood was officially designated as the National Military Cemetery. Beechwood is also home to the RCMP National Memorial Cemetery (2004) and the Ottawa Police Services Memorial Cemetery (2011).
Over time, Beechwood has reflected the changing demographics of Canada. The gravestones in the older sections are primarily Anglo Protestant. Now, there is much more diversity. Several sections have been set aside for specific cultural and faith communities.
This virtual cache highlights four of the many beautiful, interesting and/or significant locations within the cemetery.
Keep in mind:
- The cemetery is open from sunrise to sunset 7 days per week.
- Dogs are welcome but must be leashed.
- Be respectful of your surroundings.
Requirements for logging:
You have four simple tasks: 3 pictures and one title. The three pictures must be posted in your log and must include you, though your face is optional. You are encouraged to post other pictures except do not post the answer to task #3.

Go ahead and log your find when you're ready. There is no need to wait for a reply. In fact, I will only contact you if there is a problem with your log.
There is a one week grace period for completing the tasks. After that, logs without the required photos or for which the title has not been emailed are subject to deletion.
