Geocache Description:


The GC will bring you to a sedimentary rock formation of primarily limestone and gypsum which are only formed under the sea! The Limestone found in this area contains fossils yielding information and knowledge about life in prehistoric years. To the east is the only highway tunnel in New Mexico. There is not a lot of information about this tunnel that I can find, however, I did discover that the tunnel was built around 1949 and in 2017 it had a rehabilitation to ensure many more years of use. Look at the photo gallery for a map of the area before its' construction. I have also included two other photos of the road in its early days. This area of the road is on the east side of the tunnel. In these photos, you can also see Fresnal Shelter, better known today as the High Rolls Cave. Before the road was developed, the cave had more a slope entrance which allowed animals and people easy access. When it was excavated it exposed deeply stratified material, floors, diagnostic artifacts and it featured radiocarbon items and rock dated from 1500 BC to 250 AD. This entire area of New Mexico is an amazing feat of will and nature. Now look up to the northwest side of the GC. You will see a large precarious rock. When my daughter was in elementary school she noticed the rock for the first time. From the backseat I heard her say, "There it is...Optimistic rock". I did not have a clue what she was talking about. She pointed out that from a distance it looks like a fist giving a BIG thumbs up! Somehow her observation and the name she gave it has remained prevalent within our circle of family and friends all these years later. In order to claim this virtual cache you must take a picture of Optimistic Rock from the point of the posted coordinates then email the picture to me.
